The stories we tell about our communities and the people that build them are intimately bound up with the way we account for them in monetary terms.
Right now, we’re telling the wrong stories. We’re leaving too many people out. We’re pretending there is not enough to go round and this fiction is fanning the flames of hatred and division. In truth, there is plenty of food, plenty of shelter, plenty of room, and so much work to be done that not giving everyone a job and a chance to contribute to a better tomorrow is as ridiculous as it is counterproductive.
In October 2025, we hosted a free public screening of the documentary Finding the Money in Middlesbrough, UK, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A, featuring Maren Poitras, the film’s director, and other special guests. Finding the Money is the story of an intrepid group of economists on a mission to flip our understanding of money upside down.
In 2026, we’re hosting a series of workshops at Middlesbrough’s Dorman Museum.
How could reimagining money transform our town? Does Middlesbrough and do the people of Teesside deserve more credit? Can a different economic theory revolutionise our ability to tackle the climate crisis?
The true story of money is not the one we’re used to being told. Money is credit and it is time to give credit where credit’s due.
